Cut-Off Saw

Not many tools in the workshop efficiently cut through materials like steel, iron and masonry. Cut-off saws, or chop saws, are highly capable power tools that manage tasks just like that. It looks like a miter saw or radial arm saw, but includes a different cutting mechanism. Instead of making the cut with sharp teeth, it uses an abrasion wheel, which cuts on two surfaces, both on the sides and the leading edge of the wheel. In addition to scroll saws and other power saws, the cut-off saws are a must for any serious workshop.

Benefits of Cut-Off Saws

The major benefit of any cut-off saw is its speed. These devices cut cleanly and quickly through steel tubing or sizeable pieces of masonry with a single pass. This cut requires little effort and does not cause too much vibration. Their powerful motors are able to handle metals, which are much harder and denser than wood that other kinds of saws can deal with.

Chop saws are true workhorses and thus their most important feature is probably the power. Typically, the cut-off saws include 15-amp motors, which provide several horsepower. Most come with a 14-inch blade, which is quite enough to cut through thick steel. To get a better picture of the blade in the saw, read the specifications to find out how many cuts it is should handle before it needs replacing.

Convenience Features

Some cut-off saws are more adjustable than others thanks to their smart and useful convenience features. For instance, you could change the abrasion wheel quickly without a wrench if the saw uses a no-wrench wheel system. Some models also include a rapid fence system for getting the product quickly from 0-45 degrees, while special vices could securely hold different materials against the fence.

When working with such a powerful machine, safety always comes first. To avoid the saw overheating, choose a model that provides dry metal cutting and thus does not produce unnecessary extra heat or require you to use a coolant. While in use, a retracting guard adds some safety and spark deflector directs the spark away from you. For your peace of mind, you can select a saw with a safety lock that prevents it from starting accidently.
