Double Hung Windows
The windows of your home may not be something you think about much, but their design and presence can play their part in the overall look and feel of your home. It is important to choose the right kind of windows not just in terms of aesthetics, but also in terms of practicality.
What are Double Hung Windows?
Double hung windows are a window type with two sashes within the frame, a top and a bottom sash. Both the top and the bottom sashes can move vertically up and down, which means you can keep either the bottom part of the window open, or the top part, or half of both. Most double hung windows also allow for a tilt-in/tilt-out function that allows easy cleaning of the window. This is different from a single hung window, where the sliding vertical movement can only be down by the bottom sash, whereas the top sash is fixed in place.
Double hung windows are available in a few materials and material combinations. Aluminium windows in the double hung style can be found made of purely aluminium or having aluminium just for the exterior, while maintaining a classic wooden interior. Other materials in which you can find this type of window style include wood, vinyl, and fibreglass, which can come in combination with one another in some windows.
Buying Double Hung Windows
Before purchasing double hung windows, be sure to measure the size of the window you want to replace/create, and purchase one that fits those measurements. Be mindful about the colour of the windows as well; ensure that it is harmonious with the colours of the exterior as well as the interior of your home. Lastly, try to opt for windows that have the tilt-in/tilt-out option where possible, to make cleaning easier especially if you are going to place the window on upper floors.
