Smooth and sophisticated Fortified Wines

If you like your wine to pack an extra punch, you'll love fortified wines. Often drunk as a sweet dessert wine or an aperitif, this is a delicious wine fortified with a spirit, such as brandy or another grape liqueur, to enhance its sweet flavour and strength. They can be sipped as a stand-alone drink or mixed in a cocktail.

Fortified wines may begin life as a standard wine like Semillon or Grenache, but when fortified they go on to become one of five main different styles; marsala, madeira, port, sherry, or vermouth. Different countries are famous for producing different fortified types. Spain is known for its fino and oloroso sherry, while Portugal is, of course, famous for its port, which comes in tawny, ruby, white, and vintage varieties. And don't forget our very own Australian fortified wine, Muscat liqueur, produced by winemakers in Rutherglen, Victoria. Have fun sampling the different varieties and flavours out there.

These wines aren't just for drinking

Many tempting recipes also make use of fortified wines. Add marsala to sauces to give a gorgeous depth and shine that pairs beautifully with hearty meat or mushrooms. Or cook clams, mussels, and other seafood with a splash of vermouth for a real taste sensation. To get in the festive spirit, you could even use a fortified wine to give your mulled wine a real kick.
