Rugs & Carpets

Rugs and Carpets

Essential to home decor, rugs and carpets not only break up the monotony of a particularly large area of flooring, but they provide warmth and comfort as well. Moreover, using carpets can translate into tangible energy savings so it wouldn't hurt to throw a furry, comfy rug onto your living room floor, under a dining table, or elsewhere in your home.

Floor Rugs

Floor rugs range from small to gigantic and vary in thickness and softness. Under the coffee table is one of the best spots for an area rug. Consider a furry wool rug that keeps your feet comfy against the cold, hard floor. If you fancy a simpler option, acrylic rugs impart warmth while giving off a modern look with the sheer number of patterns you can choose from. Be careful in your pattern choices, as combining a mix of rug designs in a room may create a fun, eclectic feel, but it could also lead to a haphazard look.

Runner Rugs

Hallway floors can look really plain, which is why placing runner rugs can break up the colours and enhance its look. Choose ones with colourful geometric patterns or dark patterns with contrasting designs for light-coloured floors. A natural beige runner rug would look best against grey or dark stone flooring. An added benefit of using a runner is it reduces wear on the hallway flooring, especially those of anterooms or vestibules.

Materials

Rugs are available in so many materials. They can be grouped into two main categories: natural and synthetic fibres. To the first group belong wool, cotton, jute and sisal, and silk and viscose. Synthetic fibres include nylon and polyester. Natural fibres are environment-friendly because their manufacturing process does not involve the release of harmful gasses. These are generally more durable than synthetic but are more expensive and limited in design. Synthetic rugs are machine-made but offer far more customisation that natural rugs. You can even order them in a preferred pattern.
