Mix up your tonic with some spicy or fruity gins
This trendy spirit has come a long way since its days as ‘Mothers Ruin' back in the 18th century. Gin is now one of the most popular drinking spirits around, with a new Australian distillery joining the party every year. Drink it with tonic, in a gin cocktail or, with sweeter varieties like sloe gin, simply over ice.Blends of botanicals
Gin is produced by infusing vodka with different natural botanicals. Each brand has its own special blend but juniper berries are generally a must. Gin makers then distil the spirit before diluting it back to the right alcohol strength for their bottle. Finding your favourite botanical blend is a happy task. Whether you love spices, citrus flavours, London Dry or maybe an Australian gin using native ingredients like Kakadu plums, lemon myrtle or Shiraz wine grapes.Gin varieties
There are hundreds of different brands of gin on eBay from large global manufacturers like Tanqueray, Gordon's and Bombay Sapphire, to smaller craft distillers from your local area. Experiment with the types of tonics or additional ingredients such as limes, cucumbers or other fruits to pair with the specific gin you choose to really bring out the flavour.
Some gins are described as London Dry Gin (or simply Dry Gin). This purely refers to the effect of the distilling process, not that they hail from London. In fact, there are some great London gins produced right here in Australia. When producing these dry gins, distillation is a big part of the process, whereas in non-dry gins, flavours are simply added to a base alcohol. Some believe this results in an inferior gin, especially if artificial flavourings are added. However, ultimately it comes down to a personal preference and one which only you can decide for yourself.
If not for yourself, then Gin could make for a fantastic gift for your friends or family. Even better, pair with some large Copa glasses for an extra special treat.
