Everyone eats differently, so health food means lots of things to lots of people. Despite what the newest fad diet or trendy television doctor might say, there’s no arbitrary menu someone can stick to that will guarantee their health. Just like body types, healthy eating comes in all shapes and sizes. There is, however, a difference between healthy food and unhealthy food, and healthy food is always better, if you can get it. Only a trained nutritionist and your doctor can tell you what a good diet means for you, but there are some things you can watch out for on your own.

Beware Buzzwords

We’re always hearing about the latest miracle fruit or easy three-step process we can use to shed weight and get into shape. The truth is, there’s more than one healthy shape, just like there’s more than one healthy food or diet. What works for someone else may not be the right solution for you, so be careful not to get taken in by labels like “organic food.” That can mean a lot of different things, and not all organic certifications are equal. Do the appropriate research before jumping on the bandwagon with today’s health food craze!

Eat Responsibly

Eating responsibly doesn’t just mean watching your calorie count; it also means knowing where your food comes from and how people produce it. Some popular health foods, like quinoa and soya, have generated harmful impact on their countries and economies of origin. As the media promotes one magical diet after another, even vegetarians and vegans must be mindful and ethical in participating. Check up on the effects your health food of choice has not only on you, but also on the bigger picture.

Avoid Miracle Cures

It’s possible to put yourself in danger by fasting improperly or performing unscientific “cleanses” with juice or tea. Whether you’re trying to get fit, manage a medical condition or just eat better all around, you should check with your doctor and the other proper professionals about what’s right for your needs. There are healthy foods for every goal, from increased stamina to muscle gain, but the human body doesn’t change overnight. When dedicating yourself to an exercise and diet regimen, give yourself some credit and treat yourself to patience for dessert!

Start Small

It’s usually not a great idea to drastically change your diet all at once. If you’re trying to eat healthier, consider substituting things like snacks and side dishes for better choices and build up to a completely new meal plan. Protein bars and weight loss shakes can have their place in a healthy diet, but abruptly switching to nothing but whey powder and raw honey might not have the effect you intend. Be kind to yourself and take bite-size steps toward good eating.
