Golf Club Shafts

Golf Club Shafts

While some golfers focus on the head and others on the grips, its the shaft that holds everything together. Your shaft also produces most of your power, which is another factor to consider when choosing the right club. In most cases, rather than using a club off the rack you want to get yourself fitted so that you know exactly how to set up your clubs, including shaft length and stiffness. It will improve your game immensely.

Shaft Length

Every golfer has to pay attention to shaft length when looking for a new set of golf clubs. Shaft length determines the fit of the clubs, and if your clubs dont fit your stance you can find yourself losing a lot of both power and accuracy. If your impact point is as little as two and a half centimetres off centre you could lose 14 percent of your carry distance.

Shaft Flex

Flex is one of the most important qualities in a shaft. The more your shaft flexes, the more power it transfers to the ball. As a general rule the harder and faster your swing, the less flex you want in your club shaft. Too little flex and you may not reach the green; too much flex and you might have trouble controlling your ball. It all depends on the strength and speed of your individual swing.

Graphite Shafts

Graphite shafts are both light and flexible. They reduce the overall weight of your club so its easier to carry and give you a faster swing. They tend to be more expensive than steel shafts, and often offer less control especially for beginning golfers. They also absorb vibrations so they are easier on your hands and arms. Available in a wide range of flexes and colours graphite shaft golf clubs are popular with amateurs and professionals alike.

Steel Shafts

Steel shafts flex less than graphite; they are also heavier and more durable. They are the superior choice for the golfer with a powerful swing who needs a stiff shaft to maintain control. You also dont have to take as much care of them as you do graphite.
