The 18650 battery type is one of the world’s most popular lithium-ion batteries. Panasonic’s 18650 batteries are used in a range of applications, including powering several Tesla vehicles. The 18650 is a cylindrical lithium-ion battery that measures 18 by 65 millimetres, the source of its name. This makes it slightly larger than a regular AA battery, which measures 14.5 by 50 millimetres. Power capacity varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but 18650-type Panasonic lithium-ion rechargeable batteries such as the NCR18650B typically feature a capacity of around 3400mAh and discharge around 3.7 volts. Lithium-ion batteries deliver a number of benefits when compared to older alkaline types like the AA. They are capable of storing much more charge than an alkaline battery. They also self-discharge much more slowly, meaning that they will have to be recharged much less often when they are just sitting around. With no priming required and no memory, lithium-ion batteries are very low maintenance. However, they do suffer from a couple of disadvantages as well. Panasonic continues to sell a wide range of alkaline batteries in frequently-used sizes such as AA and AAA, as well as a selection of silver oxide batteries.
