Originating in Japan, washi paper has been around for hundreds of years. The designs are beautiful and was created in 2006 when a group of Japanese artists worked with a company to create colourful masking tape. The popularity continues to grow with each new colourful print and design as it spreads across the world.

Washi tape has become an easy way to add colour and flash to just about any surface. One of the benefits of good quality washi tape is that it will not leave a sticky residue on surfaces, so you can add it to just about anything. As an embellishment, it is an easy and low mess way to add colour and variety to things you do not want to mark permanently.

Perhaps one of the obvious uses for washi tape is for paper crafts. You might choose some tape printed with hearts for a Valentines card. You might want to try flowers and leaves washi tape on a new paper diary. Or perhaps you would like a set of your favourite colours to use when working on a scrapbook.

There are many different options for adding washi tape to objects in and around your home. It would be easy to change up your photo frames with some washi tape, or add an edge around a mirror. In addition to the floral or other patterns, you might find that solid colour washi tape is more suited to your decor. There is even gold washi tape to add a shine everywhere.

Washi tape can truly vary in width and length depending on the manufacturer. There is no standard washi size. You can find tape in widths of 40 mm as well as tape as thin as 5 mm. Since you can always trip the tape width, this may not be as much of an issue as length. If you are looking to buy washi tape for a particular craft project, make sure you buy enough. Most rolls are between 5 and 10 metres.
