Quad Bikes

Quad Bike

When it comes to off-roading and fun, quad bikes are certainly part of the conversation. For those just getting into the sport, quads are a bit safer than regular types of dirt bikes, but still require the same shifting and knowledge, allowing for good preparation to move on to more complicated biking. There are several different types of these quads, trikes and buggies, as well as several different common brands to choose from. If you're about to purchase your first, there are just a few things to consider.

Shaft Bikes

Shaft quad bike are larger bikes, usually 500cc or more, and these are essentially small sport utility vehicles. Obviously, they are much smaller than your typical SUV, but these are full, 4x4 ATV quads that are not just for sport, but for farm and utility work. These bikes can carry or haul a trailer, plow and farm machinery, in the front and back, depending on the model. While these can be used for off-roading and such, they are much more adapted to being a work vehicle.

Chain Bikes

Chain bikes are smaller quads that are usually 250cc and under. Keep in mind that, the smaller the motor, the less powerful the quad is, but that doesn't always have an affect on its zip. Smaller bikes can easily move around just as seamlessly and quickly, and are fun to use for both work and play. Chain bikes can also be used for some tasks, such a landscaping or farm work, but these are also your classic off-roaders. Look for chain bikes particularly designed for children and youth, as these are great starter quads.

Belt Bike Options

These small belt bikes are similar to chain bikes as far as motor size goes (typically around 250 cc), but the main difference is the drivetrain is a belt as opposed to a chain. These belt bikes are not really used for sporting, off-roading or fun; these are made for small tasks around a large yard or farm. Like other quads, these are great for transporting items across the farm or for hauling small loads back and forth.

Popular Brands

There are many popular brands when it comes to quads and dirt bikes, and they are all solidly built, well-known brands with a history of quality and durability. As you shop for quads, look for Suzuki, Polaris, Honda, Yamaha and Atomik, amongst others. These are popular brands not only in Australia, but all over the world.
