If you're starting out, you don't need half a gym in your house - a pair of very affordable adjustable-plate dumbells will allow you to start light and work your way up in weight as you progress through exercises, easily stored away when you're done. Legs are usually stronger than arms, so being able to add more weight for leg exercises like squats is a great benefit. For those with a bit more room, you might like to invest in a dumbell rack complete with several fixed weight dumbells in differing amounts, saving you having to remove and add plates as you go.

If you're serious about strength or bored with dumbells and not short on space, you might like to consider a strength training home gym to mix things up, save on gym memberships and work out from the comfort of your own home. Throw in a pull up bar for a great compound exercise movement that will really work your lats, abdominals and biceps all at once.
