Antique Pocket Watches

Solid gold antique pocket watches are a beautiful accessory and a major investment. An old timepiece will require a large financial commitment as well as ongoing maintenance, so it’s not a decision to be taken lightly.

Antique or Vintage?

The terms “vintage” and “antique” are sometimes used interchangeably, but when it comes to watches there is a big difference. Vintage watches are at least 20 years old. There are exceptions, but vintage watches are more likely to be wristwatches. A watch must be at least 100 years old to be properly classified as an antique. Most often antiques come in much older styles like a pocket watch or fob watch.

What to buy

Finding a timepiece that could potentially yield future profit can be very exciting, but is not necessarily the main objective. Choose carefully, given that a gold pocket watch is a big investment, and you don’t want to be stuck with a pocket watch that you don’t particularly like, nor can you resell. Do your research thoroughly and buy a watch that you personally like for its intrinsic appeal.

The design

Pocket watches come in a number of designs. You might choose an open-faced pocket watch, a full hunter pocket watch or even a double-hunter, or double-half hunter. These terms all relate to the case, and how much of the face it conceals. Skeleton pocket watches have clear clases that allow you to see the inner workings of the watch’s movement. There are two main mechanisms: key wind or stem wing, with the key wind being the most common type.

Important features

The two main features of a pocket watch are the case and the movement, which can be made by different manufacturers. Solid gold cases are obviously more valuable than a gold plated antique pocket watch, and more likely to house good quality movements. Cases can be plain or intricately decorated. Rather than trying to get a perfect timepiece, most collectors embrace light imperfections as showing character and history.
