Style and Substance
Released back in 2014, the Sony Xperia Z2 found its closest competition in the Samsung Galaxy S5. Replacing its predecessor – the Sony Xperia Z1 – the Xperia Z2 did a pretty decent job of offering upgraded features, in a very nice package indeed. Like the Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z2 is beautifully designed, featuring aluminium-edging, with a glass front and back, which feels incredibly luxurious in the hand. And the features? Again, like the Z1, the Z2 has a full HD display, a lightning fast quad-core processor, a 20.7 megapixel camera, and oh yes, it’s completely waterproof.
As for the upgrades on its predecessor, the Sony Xperia Z2 has a slightly larger 5.2 inch display, a slightly faster 2.3GHz Qualcomm processor, a camera capable of capturing video in 4K, and the latest Android software. So, the Xperia Z2 is not wildly different from its predecessor, but the Xperia Z1 was a pretty impressive phone to start with. Considering the proximity of their release dates, it wasn’t surprising that Sony didn’t opt for a full overhaul on the Xperia Z1 design. Is it worth it? Does the Xperia Z2 stand up within today’s hyper-competitive smartphone market? Well, that depends on the budget available, and the type of features required.
