Fishing Baits & Lures

Fishing crankbaits for a successful catch

Invest in the right style of crankbait and you won't have to spend nearly as much time to make an impressive catch. With the right fishing crankbait, you can take your rod off the fishing rod rack in the garage on Sunday morning, and head out with a bit more confidence.

What is crankbait

Crankbaits are a special type of lure used when fishing for particular species of fish, such as bass, pike, perch, Australian salmon, bream, and cod. They come in a variety of designs, with each lure carefully crafted to fool the target fish into thinking they are its preferred prey. Hooks and a line are attached to the crankbait body to reel in the catch once it has taken the bait.

Different types

Crankbaits come in a variety of designs to match the prey of different fish. Some are made of lightweight balsa wood, while others include metal parts made of lightweight aluminium. They are often brightly painted or printed, and some even have holographic patterns on them to mimic the look of fish or insect scales. Crankbait can be made as a single piece or may be pivoted to look more natural as they move.

Making the right choice is important

Different fish are lured by different prey, so choose the right crankbait for the fish you are hoping to find. Some fish will fall for a random moving shape, while you'll have more success with others if you use a crankbait that is made to resemble smaller fish, frogs, worms, or other creatures they feed on. Saltwater and freshwater cranks are different due to the different properties of the water they need to float in.

Useful extras for fishing success

Traditional crankbait design goes back as far as fishing itself, with some very special vintage baits available that have been used successfully for many years. At the other end of the scale, modern crankbaits include a wealth of additional features, including LED lights and motorised vibration, to help attract fish.
