I love this DVD. It is in B&W, grainy and has lines down the picture as old films do. Very nostalgic as I remember our B&W telly in the 1960s. Even the sound quality is nostalgic for me. I’m so glad it is available on DVD.

A wonderful trip back to a seven-part children's TV programme of the late 1960s. The black & white filming seems to add a quality that is a little lacking in the two later colour films. The acting may appear a little forced by the two younger children by modern standards, but this is all part of the charm of this now very rare version of E. Nesbit's ever popular tale. One can understand why Jenny Agguter's fine acting has stood the test of time and lead her to play the same part about two years later in the supreme 1970 film. She also played the mother in the latest film version. This is a seven-part TV series. It was produced for short programmes and for children's TV so may have a less dramatic approach to some scenes like the avalanche. It would also have been produced on a much lower budget, but this only shows when comparing with the later films and the complex effects that were used for the avalanche. Filming was done on the famous Keighley and Worth Valley Railway for this version (and for the later films). This and shows the railway in the late 1960's, a view that will not be seen again. The title music was perfect and won many hearts as friends remember it well the moment they hear the it (Greig's Peer Gynt Suites - Symphonic Dances Opus 64 Allegretto grazioso) Although this early BBC TV series version was thought to have been lost, it finally turned up and was made availble on a BBC DVD sadly for only a short time. It is now rare and worth tracking down to add to the two film versions. Charmingly simple and a very happy childhood memory. D. Mills 2008Read full review
Most people who buy The Railway Children know what they are buying because they have seen it before. A warm hearted Edwardian story starring Jenny Agutter. However there are TWO versions of the Railway Children and Jenny Agutter appears in BOTH of them. This is the original BBC version with Dinah Sheridan as the mother, Jenny Agutter as the elder daughter and Bernard Cribbins as the Porter. Check the picture of the Video Cover carefully to make sure you get the version you expect. However, both versions are excellent having similar storylines based on the book by Edith Nesbit.
