Review written May 24, 2016. Camera used on Nikon D7000. Professional photographer (Weddings, Studio/Location Portraits) Needed for low light environments such as Churches, reception halls and locations which prohibit flash. Headshot capability to separate subject from the background. Primarily prefer prime lens but needed the zoom capability. Normally shoot with a full frame and Crop sensor (Nikon DX) cameras. We are 100 % sure we will always have DX cameras so decided to buy dedicated professional lenses to give us close focal lengths to the full frames lenses so we bought Sigma 17-55 OS version and the Sigma 50-150 non OS to reduce weight. The Sigma 17-55 is a wonderfully sharpe and fast lens (we don't shoot sports) With OS on its great. No need to have it on all the time. Images are sharpe and clear with very accurate color in both JPEG and Raw (will need to tweak the raw if you use Lightroom or non Nikon software). We still use the white balance card and color checker passport in our workflow. Images are as good or slightly less than my primes but you get the zoom capability. Would recommend to any professional who has decided to stick with Crop Sensor cameras in your tool box. For pleasure shooting of landscapes etc it's great and can be used as all day walk around lens if you only wanted to take one lens. Enthusiast will see the quality of there pictures take a leap if they are already doing everything else right. This lens will take you to another level.Read full review

I would say it to be a good lens for the money. Not as sharp as I had hoped however better than what you get from a kit lens. All in all until I can afford a pro quality lens I feel this lens will satisfy most ammeter photo enthusiast.

As the title suggests, this lens replacement my kit 18-55 Nikkor. Thats exactly what I wanted too. Recently upgrading my body to the D7100 made the kit lens noticeably struggling with my desires, especially low light. This sigma has given me much more light and control with the aperture. Pictures are sharp, possibly a hair less than the kit actually, but unnoticeable unless printing wall art or something. Barrel distortion and vignetting is also considerably better and close to perfect. My only complaints are; its heavy, and the zoom ring goes opposite of nikkor standard lenses. I have not had the opportunity to use other similar class lens, but so far I would definitely recommend this Sigma as a kit replacement.

This has to be one of the best value lenses in the universe! I am a paid pro event photographer, not an exotic artsy pixel peeping geek photographer so I appreciate value and quality in a lens. I use this lens on each and every shoot! The events I do range from Parades with hundreds of thousands of people to indoor cocktail parties and charity galas. The images I get from this lens are just plain usable every time. Yes it has barrel distortion at the 17mm end but that is a one click fix in Lightroom. The 2.8 constant aperture and the contrasty results are what I appreciate. Daytime or night, this is my go to lens now.

For a DX camera, this is a good lens. It's fast, the optical stabilization is quiet, and it takes great photos. One thing I liked is that it has a dedicated "lock" button to lock the lens so that size is reduced. One thing I didn't like is that the zoom motion is opposite regular Nikon lenses - you turn anticlockwise (looking through the eyepiece) to extend the zoom and zoom in, which will be confusing if you're used to Nikon zoom lenses. All in all, it's a good buy. If the zoom has been set up the other way, I'd have said it's an excellent buy.

This lens is perfect for cameras that are not full frame, the images are very good, I use the NIKON D5200 recordings and performed at weddings and events and this captures very well the images in low light, pictures alike are very well detailed, i buy this lens because I was looking for a more cheaper option the Nikon Nikkor 17-55mm F / 2.8 DX and this is perfect. . It would give a 9/10 is almost perfect, do not give it a 10 because I tested the Nikon Nikkor 17-55mm F / 2.8 DX and is almost as good. I really like this lens because of its price can get about the same quality as the original. It has a good zoom and good reach. It is silent when zooming, and when using the auto focus is very fast and not much listening or upset, focus rings are soft and safe, allows a fast approach. I really like this lens todoas recommend it to people who want to make profeccional photography.Read full review
This won't replace my 35mm f/1.8 but it does come pretty close to being able to cover all my daily needs. The only complaint I have about the build are nuances that I've grown used to while shooting Nikon. The ring that changes the focal length is the opposite direction of all other Nikon lens and the lens lacks an option to manual focus as well as auto focus. You must physically flip the switch if you want to manual focus because the ring gets locked into place when using Autofocus. I've only used the lens a few times so far but I'm pretty satisfied with it.

I really love this lens! The quality of this lens speaks for it self. It's very sharp, actually it's more sharp than I expected. The diameter of the lens is a little big but that doesn't bother me. Also the focus ring moves as is focusing, I've read that some people don't like that, me personally, it doesn't bother me either. Overall I really recommend this lens to replace the kit a as a regular use lens too.

This lens is incredibly sharp for the price. We have the Nikon 18-105 and 18-140 the Sigma is undoubtably sharper. Love the 2.8 aperture, it makes a huge difference in lower light situations. I compared it to our 50mm Nikon prime lens and would say it’s very very close in sharpness at 50mm. As others have indicated it does have a twinge of a yellow tint.

This is my second similar lens...this one came out as great as the first one i bought from a retailer at399 plust tax price...only difference i noticed is, this one seems to be directly from Japan ' which also is a good thing, simply because the warranty sticker says THIS WARRANTY IS VALID ONLY IN JAPAN...the first one i bought had similar, but america warranty...except this difference...builty and image quality is the same! plust if you are looking for a replacement lens for your kit lens, you definetly want to have this one!
