I'm a voracious reader and particularly enjoy books about the supernatural, but I haven't found too many books even in this category which grab my interest from the first page and hold it spellbound to the last page--but this is one. The scope of the novel is amazing, linking stories of the Mayfair family from hundreds of years ago through the present by use of the Talamasca, a learned organization Rice created to provide past history and explain the sometimes unexplainable things which occur in many of her plots. While the many characters come and go over the centuries, the Talamasca is always there to watch and record, and those records provide much of the background and explanation for the narrative. In the present, the story of Dr. Rowan Mayfair and those around her provide a much needed link to the ordinary and believable world the rest of us usually inhabit. As they are drawn into the orbit of the supernatural spirit called Lasher, we see it happen bit by bit and like some of the characters we are powerless to stop or influence events. The book evokes the essence of hot, steamy, haunted New Orleans, and there is probably not another city in the United States where the reader could as easily believe the things that happen in this book could occur. The Witching Hour is the first book of three about the Mayfair witches and if you enjoy it, the sequels Lasher and The Taltos will extend and amplify the basic story of Rowan Mayfair and the incredible Mayfair witch family.Read full review
This novel has a lot of detail. For me that’s a plus , on both the character’s & setting. It will take a while to finish, as it’s over 1000 pages in length. Still it’s another great work from Anne Rice.

I had previously read this book as a paperback and purchased this one to have the hardcover version to actually convince a friend to read it as he never reads softcover books! I love all the Anne Rice books I have read so far especially the mummy, but, read this one last which I should have read first. Anne is so descriptive that it was easy to pick up the story line and I soon delved into its delicious pages devouring every word I read. If anyone can write as good as Alexander Dumas, this may be the person. Thank you Anne. Anthony Bashford
I found the series captivating the first time I read them and decided to get some HB in case I would like to read them again. It is really not just about Rowan Mayfair as the TV series makes it out to be.

This is my favorite book by Anne Rice. I have read nearly all of her books and none have topped this one. The history which takes up the largest part of this book, gets a little tedious, but adds a knowledge of people from the past that are still important charactures to the story in understanding the present and future of this family. I simply adore this book and I have bought it for my teenage granddaughters birthday!
Wonderful book...takes you on a journey through time..compelling series
