It is a stunning panorama of the turbulent decade when Joplins was the rallying voice of a generation that lost itself in her music and found itself in her words.

  • The first edition is worth the effort to track down

Myra Freidman wrote a first-person account of Janis at the end of her life, as her publicist and friend. She worked for Janis's Agent, Albert Grossman, putting her on near the center of the action, as a witness. The book is an irreplaceable account of what it was like to live with Janis, and contend with the problems brought about by such immense and truly historic talent, with boundless energy, driving ambition, and single-minded devotion to her craft, but who never had a chance to grow up. The first edition has information that has been removed, for legal reasons, from the current version that is sold on Amazon. Permission to include these details was withdrawn by her family, so for legal purposes, the first edition ironically became "unpublished". I imagine that Janis's sister preferred to reserve these details for her own biography, "Love Janis". The first edition itself is a better product than the current paperback edition. The pictures are higher quality, and it has better binding. Of course, what is missing from the first edition is the perspective gain after the time has passed, the epilogue, and the "where people are" listing that was written about 25 years ago. Many of those folks have since passed.
