About this product

Product Information

These two spectacular, grandiose battle epics from great director Sergei Eisenstein--who pioneered the Soviet montage style of the silent era--are prototypes for many of the classic war epics that preceded them. Produced under the totalitarian Stalin regime, Eisenstein's work managed to turn Soviet propaganda into revolutionary art. ALEXANDER NEVSKY, which details the true story of the general's triumph over Teutonic Knights, features the much-imitated Battle on Ice sequence. IVAN THE TERRIBLE is the story of the powerful czar who regressed into an insane tyrant. Ironically, the second part of this film was banned when Stalin noticed too many similarities between the portrayal of Ivan and himself.

  • Eisenstein Trilogy

These are amazing, indeed landmark films in the history of cinema. Nevsky is famous for its brilliant score by Prokofiev. While a total piece of propaganda against the Germans (it was made in 1939) it is one of top films of all time for it imagery, montage and direction. Nikolai Cherkassov as Nevsky is a commanding presence that dominates every frame he appears in, and the Battle on the Ice is one of the greatest action sequences ever. Recall this is the director of Battleship Potemkin, with its Odessa Steps sequence that has been honored, copied and parodied in many films. Criterion Edition is as good as will ever get - great historical preservation - the print is whistle clean and the subtitles new and totally legible. And the music appears to have been rerecorded and sounds so much better in hifi sound. This is perhaps the greatest film score ever and a suite of the music has made it a concert hall and recording favorite. The commentaries and essays are well worth reading for a complete understanding of this masterpiece. The two Ivan films, the second in color, also occupy top positions in the history of Russian cinema, and indeed world cinema. Eisenstein's imagery is unforgettable as is his use of close up faces. Again, Cherkassov has the lead role as Ivan. It's a stylized presentation that can't be seen with expectations of modern acting and moving cameras etc. But if you let yourself be carried by the director, you will experience a real epiphany. Don't miss, esp. if you can get this for $30 or less.

  • Amazing piece of film history

If you are a film enthusiast, a history buff, or just looking for a good old flick, these films are your answer. The atmosphere is dense and precise, and the music is truly what made Eisenstein famous. Some downsides for the modern viewer are, of course, the films' age, which means some of the acting comes off as slightly over-the-top, and, of course, the color palate is severely limited. Any fan of old movies should definitely be used to this by now, and Eisenstein provides some of the finest examples of the genre. It must also be said that even if you don't like old films, but are interested in Russian history, these films are a definite must-see. In regards to the Criterion Collection's overall value, it cannot be beat. All three of Eisenstein's classics in one efficiently priced bundle, how can you go wrong? The answer, quite simply, is you cannot.
