It took me a while to discover Dr Horrible. I came across it almost by accident after seeing sample pages from the tie-in comic book and thinking, "Hey, that character looks like Nathan Fillion... And that one looks like Neil Patrick Harris!" A quick google later and I'd discovered that it was indeed the two of them that these illustrations were based on. They had both worked on a little web project by the name of Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and who was in charge? None other than Joss Whedon, a person who I admired and respected greatly for giving me Buffy when I was in my teens and then Firefly when I was a bit older, both absolutely fantastic shows, the latter also introducing me to the fantastic work of Nathan Fillion. I duly hunted the brief episodes down and watched them straight through. Then I watched them straight through again. It's wonderful being able to see Joss go absolutely mental with a project he has full control over; the jokes are very funny, the music has very catchy melodies and fantastic lyrics, and the ending (which I shall not spoil) came as quite a shock, and refreshingly so as it did something most TV shows would dare not do these days for fear of alienating an audience they must assume only responds to sugar and happiness and bunnies. The acting is superb, Fillion obviously had a lot of fun playing the smug Captain Hammer, the antagonist of the piece despite technically being the hero, and Harris' turn as Billy/Doctor Horrible leaves you aching for the character as he desperately tries to win the girl of his dreams, Penny (played by Felicia Day, who, thanks to this and her own web series, The Guild, I have a gigantic geek crush on). The story is engaging, the jokes hilarious, the characters perfectly written and acted by all involved, the effects more than good enough to keep your disbelief well and truly suspended and the music will have you still singing it several weeks later. I did already own this as a digital download, but upon seeing the list of special features I decided it would be worth my while owning on Blu-Ray as well. They don't disappoint - there are a couple of making-ofs which feature the cast and crew discussing the production and the music, with plenty of footage from the filming, studio sessions and even some of the demo songs performed by Joss himself when pitching the idea. There are two commentaries. The first a regular cast and crew commentary, the second is "Commentary: The Musical". This is just as funny if not more so than the feature itself. The cast and crew once again pile into the sound booth, only this time they're pretty much playing caricatures of themselves performing brand new songs, some of which aren't even relevant to what's going on in the feature. For me, the only feature which is a bit hit and miss are the Evil League of Evil Application Videos. These are a selection of viewer submitted videos playing characters applying to the Evil League of Evil (The supervillain group seen in the feature). Some of them are reasonably entertaining, most are quite dull and I did find myself wanting to fast-forward through them. Even so, this is only a small bother and does not bring down the overall quality of the disc at all. To summarise, if you are a fan of Fillion, Harris, Day, Whedon, superheroes, sci-fi, comedy or musicals then there's a very strong chance you will find something positive to take away from this experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyoneRead full review
This amazing show is even better on blu-ray. It includes a small limited edition (hard to find) Dr. Horrible comic book. Enjoy Nathan Fillion, Felicia Day and, of course, Dr. Horrible himself, Neil Patrick Harris in this wonderful Whedon creation. Includes the sing-along commentary and other fun features. Highly recommended!! Buy two (give one as a gift!) You'll want to share your love for this original musical.
Absolutely love this movie! It is hilarious! And the songs are catchy, I've had them stuck in my head for over two weeks and counting. Now my kids are constantly singing them too. LOL!
