The Canon A640 is in my opinion one of if not the best "point & shoot" cameras out there. I bought my first A640 four years ago and now I have purchased a second from ebay. My first one was taken hostage by my wife. I have a DSLR but I carry my A640 every where I go. I say it is the best camera because: It is small enough to carry in my shirt or pant pocket & easy to use. Many times I have handed it to someone to use and be unfamiliar with it they still can figure it out and take great pictures. Settings: It has a wide range of settings. The close up setting is awesome I have taken pictures of insects that look like they came from National Geographic. Flip-out screen: This feature is so great when you are standing in a crowd and want to get a shot of something in front. Just lift the camera above your head, tilt the screen down and you can see the shot. Video: Video is just ok. But if you want to shoot some last minute video it nice to have it right there with the twist of a dial without having to carry another camera. The 10 megapixels will give you awesome clean & clear shot that are big enough that you can crop them and stil have a nice size photo. The pictures I take with my A640 easily rival the pictures I take with my 15 megapixel DSLR.Read full review
True story; I owned a Canon Rebel T3i. It took great pictures, had many features, and was excellent quality. It was also large and loud. I like to take candid pictures and the Rebel was not good for that. I sold the Rebel on eBay and bought two cameras: a Canon PowerShot A1400 and a Canon PowerShot A640. Both have viewfinders and that is huge for me. I prefer to hold the camera to my eye when taking pictures. Plus the viewfinders both zoom with the lens. You don't always get that. The A640 has an articulating LCD screen which is great for taking pictures of things that I sell on eBay. I put the item on a table, the camera on a tripod and shoot at object level. Visually much better than shooting above the object. Much easier with an articulating LCD. Both cameras have a multitude of manual configuration settings such as ISO, white balance, exposure adjust. Plus the A640 can take filters with an optional adapter which is still available. I just bought a density filter for the A640 and will be taking some time exposures of the rides at night when the SummerFest comes to town. The A1400 easily fits in a shirt pocket.Taking pictures with the Rebel was a bit of a chore. Taking pictures with the PowerShots is fun. Taking pictures should be fun. These cameras make it so.Read full review
This is probably my favorite digital camera ever. The swivel screen is one of my favorite things about the camera. It makes it easy to take pictures at any angle and actually see the photo you're taking before you take it. The quality of the pictures it takes is really great as well. The camera is easy to use and has many features and options, such as video, night shots, and portrait modes. It's easy to hook up to a TV or computer to view the pictures or videos. All in all, a great camera for the money.
i recently came into a nikon D3000 that belonged to my now deceased brother in law. i did a comparison shot of a piece of artwork and the a640 won out. i used the nikon 18-55 zoom for the copy photo. i have been using my A640 for many years and never had an issue with it (it has taken a beating and is still fine). i even bought a second one on ebay in mint condition several years ago because it has all the features i want (aa batts, video, compact, great macro, articulating screen, etc.). anyhow, i love the a640, but will keep the D3000 as a tribute to my brother in law and a reliable "plan B".

I use the A620 daily at work and have for over 8 years wearing out several sets of rechargeable batteries and wearing the printing off of the case with my fingers. The movable view screen is really helpful as I take photos of items being tested in a lab. I figured that a newer version with a larger screen and more resolution would be a step up. I was able to get a real clean used camera for a fraction of it's new cost and nearly nothing compared to what new cameras of this quality are selling for. The easy ability to set the timer for the delay I want and then have it shoot more than one shot at a time keeps from having to try and get the family to re-pose for those family photographs. The ability to shoot in black and white or sepia allows me to play with my creative side. I dont' think you can go wrong as long as your camera is in nice shape.Read full review

The A640 is an excellent 'point & shoot' camera. It does not have some of the more recent nifty features (like, image stabilization and face recognition) but I will gladly take an A640 over most new point & shoots. The control options that are available when you leave full auto mode are excellent and the lens is outstanding. The sensor is also very good at the lower ISO's. My first A640 gave me 80,000+ shots and only faltered near the end. A used A640 at a fair price is a very good find. Remember not all pixels are created equal.
Not only do these models take great pictures, but the preview screen swivels and tilts to almost any angle. This one feature let's you see over crowds, etc. and focus on the subject, instead of hoping the picture will come out. The one purchased on eBay was a replacement for the same camera that took thousands of pictures from a motorcycle that traveled tens of thousands of miles. The first withstood several years of vibration, rough handling and being dropped (a lot). Too bad they stopped making this design.
I've had a few incarnations of this Canon model, and have loved them all. They take incredible pictures and video at a fraction of the size of DSLRs. They're not the crazy slim type but are still easily portable and very durable. The best feature is the swivel-screen, which let's you easily take shots from any angle. I have to stand in crowds a lot and this let's me get really nice shots.
This camera is a gem. It is easy to use. my wife and I have worn out our old A640. I bought her a new camera ??? and I went looking for a replacement for our old reliable. I am totally amazed that when I was bidding on this camera that a brand new Canon A640 was on the market for $700.00 big ones. I am really happy with my purchase and know that I can take it anywhere because of all it's qualities. The quality of the photos is comparable to anything in the $300.00 to $5oo.oo range. If you happen to come across an opprotunity to buy one of these cameras, they are hard to find, by all means buy it. You won't regret it!
This is one of the better point & shoots from Canon - with the fact that it runs on AA batteries being a bonus. In this case, I bought an old one - supposedly clean & pristine - with a Canon underwater housing to match. This combination is excellent for your average diving holiday, where the camera is usually left on its video selection and the results are excellent. The downside this time is that the camera I bought was extremely scratched, scuffed & had obviously never seen the inside of a protective pouch since new...though I'm assured by the original owner that it will work just fine. We'll have to see, though such damage will preclude my usual habit of trading in the camera & housing to one's dive centre at holiday's end, against equipment & boat hire fees. This usually works well - especially when the Dive Centre staff see how good this little Canon's underwater video can be...Read full review
