As the title says, this item is a bit dated. Pros: -fits in the palm of your hand -batteries last FOREVER. -backlit screen -very easy user operating system with minimal effort Cons: -no external port to connect to a computer or other peripheral - (can be a con depending on how you feel about this:) accuracy can range from a foot away to about 24 feet away. Overall, its good for what its worth. It connects to 5 available orbiting satellites. It marks the trail path you've walked, it has a backlit screen and its very comfortable in the hand and is light, portable and small. I like it for what it is, you be the judge.

takes 3 to 5 minutes to get satellite lock. Not able to connect to P.C. because this model was not made for any type of connection. better than no G.P.S..

If you can pick one up at a good price, the Garmin Geko 101 is a nice little gps. Signal acquisition is slow, compared to the Etrex, and it's not going to do as well in trees or under other cover. But for basic gps use, it's a fine device, and it's tough to get much better than 3 oz for those who are seeking to save on weight. There are a few other currently offered gps units at that weight, but of course you're going to pay more for the latest, and if it's the basics you want, a few unnecessary features.
This is my second Garmin. Both are GR8 devices for their intended purposes. I bought the Geko 101 for its size, weight, and cost. I use it to capture the top speed of model radio control racing boats. That helps me to tune the boats and achieve its best speed. The Geko is so small and light weight AND ACCURATE that it is ideal for my intended purpose. Short coming: It can't store a history of runs (trips) like my GPS II Plus that I use on my mountain bike trail rides. Tom H Valrico, Florida
Small size and very light weight make it easy to carry and use. Instructions are clear enough to be able to use with little or no previous experience with gps units. Navigation through pages is relatively easy. Some of the more "powerful" applications are not always explained thoroughly. AAA battery power cause the unit to require fresh batteries frequently. Rechargeable batteries help ease that minor negative. I would definitely recommend a unit like this to anyone looking for a gps unit for personal use.
I like the way the Geko operates. Even if I have not used it for a while it is easy to pick up again and remember how it works. It is very small and light, not a burden in your pack and easy to reach from your front pocket. 250 waymarks are more than enough. I have used it both to mark the path behind me and to search for a point ahead of me, a point I have not yet visited but have located on a map. In both cases it has, many times, kept me on the right way. A lot of my hiking is in the Chihuahuan Desert. If I get lost I could be in real danger in this dry, isolated area. The Geko has kept me out of genuinely life-threatening confusion at least twice. I would never go cross country without it in my pocket. This is my second Geko. The first one died after a long and useful life.
I HAVE owned this exact Geko GPS(for 3 years now). I absolutely love its simplicity and bought another one exactly like it for my husband! It's great for mushroom hunting, tracking deer, or anytime you want to wander the woods. It's very nice because IT'S SO SIMPLE! It doesn't have a bunch of buttons & screens... that you never use anyway. It's small size lets me put it in a cell phone case. You "mark" where you are, then turn it off!(why waste battery power). Wander around the woods, turn it back on. It shows you how far away from your "mark"(vehicle) you are, and shows how to "get back" to your mark! SIMPLE, SIMPLE, SIMPLE.....I LOVE IT!
this is the 2nd 101 that i have owned. the first one ate batteries and would shut off. these are the most basic of gpses. the sattelite lock in is not all that super fast but is adequate. user interface is a little cumbersome due to the lack of buttons. i purchased this due to the weight. this is the lightest gps you can buy. i only use it for way points and occasional navigation and for that is works well. there is no interface for computers so everything is manual. it also does not have any maps. i do not believe this unit us availble new from garmin. simple and light.
Feature set is decent and small size an asset. It is not very water resistant as battery hatch does not seal. Satellite aquisition is unacceptably slow- my iPhone 5 is much faster.

Love that it exactly replaced the one we had used for so many years. Don't need all the extra bells and whistles and we don't have to learn how to use a new device! Go out and set our waypoints and we are set again - ready for the foggy days and white out blizzards if we get caught out in them! Like finding a new friend. Nice price. Good packing and shipping. ☺
