  • Engaging

Down By Law, on DVD: Directed by Jim Jarmusch with his usual wry, quirky sense of humor & pathos, this is one of his better films. The main characters, played by Tom Waits, John Lurie, & Roberto Benini, are at the top of their form & have great chemistry. The story of malcontent, messed up men ending up in prison together & then escaping into the Bayou country of Louisiana, is engaging, with the black & white cinematography non ;par excellente. Plus a great moody jazzy soundtrack by Lurie. This was a preowned DVD in excellent condition, and the 2-disc Criterion Collection edition is full of interesting interviews & insights. Shipped expediently and was a good price, to boot.

  • JARMUSCH IS DOWN BY LAW

this is one hell of a movie- almost seems like a documentary of friends on the road. the way waits, laurie and benigni bond on their journey of love, regrets, sadness and triumph is a testament to good film making and good story lines. set in louisiana, you can feel the presence of other worldly spirits as the film pans through the desolate streets of louisiana while a tom waits song reverberates in the background. much the same as the boat they are in rows through the swamps. filmed in black + white , this is a classic with well done acting from not only the main characters but also the supporting roles. ellen barkin never looked better (without looking sexist).

Exceptional film by Jim Jarmusch. A must for aspiring film makers, writers, directors, and budding actors. You don't have to be a polished actor or film maker to cast a wonderful film. The companion to "Down by Law", is "Stranger Than Paradise", also by Jarmusch. Quick Vignettes ranging from 10 seconds to a minute and a half. Some with only a glance from the characters. Stranger Than Paradise is my favorite by far!

  • "Right here on WYLD"

“Down by Law” is another milestone of independent cinema from idiosyncratic movie man Jim Jarmusch. Just from viewing the opening credits showing New Orleans and its settings along with the rumbling voice of Tom Waits tell you all needed to know. Kicked out of the house by his girlfriend, a laid off disc jockey (Waits) inadvertently drives a stolen car with a body in the trunk. Waits is arrested and shares a cell with a high-class pimp (John Lurie) recently busted for soliciting a minor during a sting operation. The film becomes better when an enthusiastic Italian tourist (the talented and insanely funny Roberto Benigni) who is arrested for murdering a card player, teams up with the duo. After breaking out of prison, the runaways get lost in the surrounding Louisiana bayous before ...

  • There is a good deal of material here and worth watching.

The fact that this is a Criterion Collection Movie already shows that this film has a great deal of merit. Tom Waits is excellent as are the rest of the cast. This is an American adventure story. It's comedy and tragedy. Enjoyable, take your time watching it.
