This is the second one I bought, the first one I bought brand new from a chain and paid over $400 for it. It has no hard drive but records at various speeds from 1 to 6 hrs per disc. The shorter the record time (1 hr) the higher the quality. I record many sports events to watch at more convenient times. The unit performs flawlessly. The unit also records DVD-RAM discs which can be erased and rerecorded. The DVD-R discs though not erasable are fairly inexpensive. Menus are straight forward and easily learned. Programmable recording is simple and step by step, with on-screen prompts. A great value for the money, a great deal if you can find one for under $100 Only drawback is no hard drive, a minor detail.
I actually purchased this unit as a replacement to the one I purchased almost 14 years ago. I own and operate a video service company and one of my services is to transfer all consumer video tapes to DVD. Since I've owned it I have burned over 3,500 DVDs. It's definitely a work horse. One of the great features of this machine is Flexible Recording where I can set the recording time. Most DVD burners did not have this feature. You were limited to 1, 2, 4, and 8 hour recording time so if I tape was 1 1/2 hours long, you had to record a 2 hour DVD or stand by and stop the recording which was not always possible for me. It was nice to set the exact recording time and walk away.

Product does recording on DVD. When using the timer recording, the RAM capability allows you to edit out the commercials while you are watching that recording. Then when watching that recording in the future, there is no need to fast forward thru the commercials. But the machine also has a commercial skip feature if you do not feel the need to edit out commercials. You also have the option to completely delete the recording from the disc if wanted.

My original Panasonic DVR-E55 recorder finally broke after about 20 years. I really wanted the same make and model because it was easy to use and had worked well for so long. Unfortunately, that particular model has been discontinued. Thankfully, I was able to buy this used one which is identical to my old one.

I had one just like this a few years back. I had several dvd's that wasn't finalized. I purchased this recorder for finalizing these . It works great.

These units are great for "taping" TV shows instead of a VCR. With RAM discs you can pick and choose what to watch when, and not in any order. You can also watch something while it's recording something else, or start watching a show (from the beginning) when it's 15 minutes into it's recording. No waiting for the show to complete first. Simple to use. I love it. I have another just like it and wanted a second unit as a backup and player in my workout room. I would absolutely recommend.
outstanding product. I have used these recorders for years and have had outstanding results. This unit was to replace an older model that finally gave up the ghost and needed parts that were more expensive than to get another unit since panasonic quite making parts for them. I have found several shops that will repair them but at a cost. I can clean most parts on these units including the laserlens but in the electronics I'm lost. I think the advent of dvrs that this is a dying breed. I just cannot afford multiple dvrs or external hardrives to keep the entertainment we want.
The DMR-E55 is easy to use, provides great image quality and the rewritable discs seem never to need replacement. For the price, the unit is so far superior to a VCR that it can't be beat. I support the audio with a Bose system and music playback is superb. Not all discs work and recordings won't play back in every machine. However, in a situation where you don't plan to share DVDs, there is no worry, anyway. Maxell DVD-RAM rewrittable disks (order # 636070 work excellently).
I received my first DM$-E55 about 4 years ago and loved it. The machine served me faithfully until about 5 months ago. I was not sure if the machine was still being manufactured, but decided to look for a used on on eBay. Low and behold I found not just one, but 3 to 4. I was losing hope as I was not winning when the last one I saw came up for auction and I WON! This recorder is easy to use with one button recording and a time slip feature that allows you to record one program while watching another. You can even rewind while the recording is taking place! Very nice unit and simple to operate. I hope this one gives me another 5 years of service. Thanks eBayers!
