When injury forced Bill Goldberg to retire from playing pro-football in the NFL at thirty, after stints with the Atlanta Falcons and the Los Angeles Rams, he was persuaded to move into wrestling. Known simply as Goldberg, he was an immediate hit, winning a record 170 fights in succession in WCW Wrestling, becoming the World Heavyweight champion within a year of his debut. Yet he is a far more complex character than his 6ft 3in, 285lb build would suggest. The biggest Jewish sports personality of all time, he is the son of a doctor and a concert violinist, he champions the cause of welfare for animals and has twice spoken to Congress on Capitol Hill on the subject.
