Good quality mouse - will purchase another unit

This type of mouse - which you do not need white paper or can use on glass or uneven surface - is the only way to go. I also use this for my tablet/laptop. To make the ball even smoother and more responsive, I spayed contact cleaner on the ball metal bearings and it works better.

  • Top critical review

Too small, 2 buttons, bad software, cheap switches, strange screws, cheap pads, over priced.

The ring and the trackball move very smoothly even after months of heavy use and the optical sensor is accurate and durable. But the whole mouse is small enough to fit mostly in the palm of my hand. While the trackball can be removed for cleaning, the scroll ring cannot. The ball is too small which limits it's range of motion. The buttons are aren't positioned or shaped comfortably. The driver software can be configured to create a third virtual button when you click both physical buttons at once but it's not compatible with many game and office applications and it hogs the CPU. After only a few weeks of light to moderate use, or a few days of heavy use, the buttons will begin to automatically double-click on occasion. This becomes more severe over time until the buttons become unresponsive. It's assembled with very tiny screws that require an uncommon star-shaped screwdriver which makes DIY maintenance impossible. The three rubber pads on the bottom are glued on. The glue easily absorbs oil and becomes soft, causing the pads to come off. $30 is affordable but a bit steep for such a toy.

  • Almost hits the mark

My only gripe is that the buttons are placed back and require me to move my thumb and pinks back 1/2" to click them...it is difficult and not natural to double click with my thumb which is much harder to get used to at this angle. I think the cheapo Logitech Marble may have a better grasp of this with the position of the click keys. Still, the logitech does not have the handy scroll wheel which i love.

  • Great track ball

This trackball is what I have been missing for years and did not realize this until now. A hand held mouse does not have the speed, comfort and accuracy of a trackball. Why I hesitated in the purchase of a trackball is that many did not have a page scroll control which, for my use, is essential. This one does using the ring controller - well designed and is a pleasure to use. I will be swapping out my other mouse units for a Kensington Scroll Ring Mouse. Cons: The extension pad which is packaged separately, that attaches to the mouse body to give your arm / wrist support, is not at all well designed to attach to the mouse, The tooling out design of the pad does not snugly fit onto the mouse body. It needs to clamp or snap onto the body so that it stays in place. This is why the 4 stars. I removed the ball and lightly added a Teflon dry lub to the ball - this stuff is smooth and the weight of the ball adds an inertia component needed for a quality action.

  • It is what it is.

There is an inherent limitation to trackballs in that they'll only go as far (in one motion) as you can roll the trackball itself. If it's not too far, then it's not a problem. If it is, then it's a question of whether its as good as a wireless mouse or other input device. Only you can know that for sure. For me, while the trackball worked flawlessly, it eventually became obvious that the trackball wasn't going to work as I needed it to. However, it did surprise me by doing rather well in Photoshop tracing. 4 stars.

  • Great trackball, not all created equal!

i have preferred trackball to mouse for a long time for art reasons and a broken wrist. Many of the ones on the market are NOT great, get gummy easy or otherwise have un-smooth motion. Kensington does a better than average job for placement precision, comfort and this model suits me well.

  • It's barely ok

As an owner of Kensington Orbit, when I decided to get myself a portable trackball this was an obvious choice, since it is basically Orbit's smaller portable copy. Turned out it is not nearly as good as Orbit is. The touch ring for scroll is a very bad replacement for original mechanical one, it is curved, but your natural instinct is to drag your finger in a line, and with this thing you have to intentionally curve it. Second - the ball itself is small, and unlike on Orbit it is being held by rotating balls. In theory it should make it more smooth, in reality I don't feel the difference, but they tend to fall off and easy to just lose. Where this trackball shines is on buttons - they both are mechanical and very comfortable, and when compared to Orbit they are a lot better. However, the shape of it is very questionable, where Orbit and other trackballs have a smooth slope this one has a steep one with a bump. This shape is very uncomfortable, and to me it causes hand strain pretty fast. But it gets worse - the shape only makes the small ball worse, since there is a lot of extra surface around the ball, and your hand don't lie on the ball, it rests on all this extra surface. So to me this trackball is a disaster, and a very good example how after making a great Orbit Kensington can fail miserably on Orbit Wireless. Apart from buttons - the build quality is pretty decent, and the pads on the bottom are good at keeping trackball from moving. It's just the design where this fails so badly.

  • Takes awhile to get used to

With the Kensington Orbit, I really like the smoothness of the trackball's movement, as well as the scroll ring. It's so much more than just for scrolling a webpage up or down, as it also works for scrolling left and right in Windows file explorer. But the ergonomics definitely have room for improvement. I don't understand why Kensington had to make it so wide and flat. It's impossible to cradle it inside your palm like you would with their Orbit Wireless Trackball (#KD6704). Also, with the way your thumb rests on the left click button, it's difficult to fire off rapid double-clicks. This is also because of the wide & flat proportions. I also have the Wireless Trackball, #KD6704, for my laptop, and with that model's ergonomics it's much easier to cradle it in my palm. Eventually, after 3 weeks of use, I've learned how to use it...I just wish it was more compact.

  • Kensignton Orbit Wired Trackball is the way to go!!!!

The Kensington Orbit Wired Trackball Mouse with Scroll Ring & Ambidextrous Design was bought to replace a gaming mouse. I prefer the simple design and ease of use of the trackball over the mouse. Save space on your desktop by dedicating a smaller space to your mouse. I found it very easy to use and very reliable.

  • I am please with my decision to buy the Orbit

I've always preferred a trackball over the ordinary computer mouse. Over the years I've enjoyed using the large Kensington trackballs. Recently, I decided to purchase the smaller variety to use with one of my old laptops. Basing my decision on personal experience along with the reputation of Kensington, I chose the Orbit. It works as well as I expected it would. However, I feel that the buttons should have been a little "elevated" from the surrounding frame. Hence, only four stars out of five. I managed to rectify the slight design imperfection by using small peel & stick rubber pads (sold as anti-mar tabs to protect furniture). Now the buttons are easier to detect by feel making them more satisfactory for me. The bottom line is that I am please with my decision to buy the Orbit and would certainly recommend it to a friend albeit with the suggestion to add the pads.
