If you understand the word "cerebral," then Ghost in the Shell should be on your "must watch" list. Yes, yes, it is anime and all that entails: Tight action sequences, unnaturally proportioned women, a wide variety of robots, and an over-arching theme dealing with the meaning of existence. But before you get too dismissive, hear me out. You will be hard pressed to find books that pack in as much depth as Ghost in the Shell. The characters, the places, the storylines, each have a great deal of substance. Even the AI robots have quirky and charming personas, and by the end of each series, they even show great nobility. The Stand Alone Complex series starts here. For the action types, it will likely grip you from the first 15 seconds and not let go. For those who enjoy more subtle and, yes, cerebral entertainment, stick with it for another volume or two. Once you see the pieces coming together, you will not be disappointed.Read full review
This Ghost in the Shell series is based on the "Ghost in the Shell" movie. It includes great storytelling, quality, real-world looking animé, and highly imaginative plots. "Ghost in the Shell: SAC" is thought-provoking and can be considered intellectual, despite being filled with many quality action sequences. (This combination is possibly due to the jobs of the characters being of a counter-espionage nature.) The setting is a futuristic city where many of the inhabitants have cybernetic implants, including some having partial cybernetic brain implants. In the various episodes, the main characters fight terrorists, cybercriminals, assassins, and corrupt government officials. Some of the episodes are better than others, but overall, I highly recommend this entire series.

As anime series/movies/shorts go, this one is on the top ten for me because it takes the world of anime and mixes a little of several genres in for good measure. There is the die-hard types, the detective types and of corpse, the whole Cyborg police force thing is very appealing. I started to watch the first episode of Vol.1 last night and soon found myself throwing a one-person Anime-A-Thon for all the rest of Vol.1!! Don't be surprised if you end up going to work the next day after watching this in the state that I did: With 4 hours sleep. ^.^
I was hoping for a continuation of the movie... unfortunately the low buget manga style used in these tv shows cuts too many corners on the animation and the clunky vocal dubbing means that these for tv versions are jumpy and feel about 75% finished in comparison to the movie. But if thats what you like about manga in the first place then go for it.
