The video is a history of the pioneers of the ballet world. All the legendary dancer's and Balanchine who came from this dance company. I think a balletomania has to see this video to learn about the history of how the ballet companies started with this one. It was an honor to be taught by George Zoritch. I miss his humor and unique character.

I have been looking for information on the history of Russian ballet and there are not many books written on it (in English). I did find a good book by George Zorich on the subject. This film is a great documentary on the history of Russian Ballet. It is better than just reading a book because you will be able to see the film clips of actual dance performances. It is packed with information and it is also wonderful that it has followed up on what these dancers (now in their 80s, 90s) are doing. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in ballet.
A back stage look at the operations of two competing ballet companies. I especially enjoyed the interviews with the former stars.

I studied classical ballet in S.F. Bay Area. First instructor studied with Theodore Kosloff, one of the original Russian dancers who came to American at the same time as George Balanchine. She also was a principal dancer with the Original Ballet Russes. I also studied with Alan Howard in S.F. He is, at the time of filming, live and interviewed and has since passed away. The history of the Ballet Russes was never more clear than in this film. It is fascinating for any "old" dancers like myself or those young ones who are interested in the history of this art. I highly recommend this film. An invaluable piece of memorbilia.
This is one of the most important documents in the history of dance. It shows us the origins and the dancers that kept and made the Grand Tradition of Classical Ballet as we know it today. It is a rare opportunity to see these legends speak and perform. There is priceless vintage clips. In the end I just wanted more. Fortunately, this docutment was made. I knew as well as the dancers themselves that this would be the last time that they would be able to share their wonderful memories with us and each other. I was delighted with this wonderful DVD as it was presented by the people who actually appeared on stage as dancers at that time and so they were able to describe what it was like in those days. Highly recommend to anyone who is interested in ballet.

One of the best Ballet DVD done recently. Very enjoyable and facinating, lovely film. The story is intriguing and the unique participation of Miss Irina Baronova makes this DVD a great historical document. Exellent gift and great Ebay item! Kitmir 1925
Some may say it is dry. Some may want to keep a box of kleenex close by. Some fantastic footage, and wonderful stories. Makes you appreciate what we have today as artists, and those we have to thank for making it so.
I bought it for my mother-in-law for Valentines. She loves the ballet and thinks the DVD is wonderful.
