Without doubt, this is an essential reference in the enjoyment of human life. Dr. Alpert found himself in a material rat race and blew himself out of it ..... tossed the suit and began wearing a robe. I've heard of this before.."Baba Naga Sufi" was a top-brain professor from Germany who left it all behind to become the holy man of a small remote village ...the fella who told me of him went to become his student. Upon finding the holy man he presented him with a solid gold Patek Philippe wristwatch (worth about $60,000.USD)...the Baba Naga held it to his ear to hear the ticking, then placed it upon a rock, took another rock and smashed it as my friend looked on in horror. That was his first lesson. This book "Be Here Now" is the ultimate collection of thoughts from here & beyond. This book, the first 5 years of High Times Magazine, and every issue of Gilbert Shelton's "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers" commix would give anyone everything they'd need to know about "the other people".Read full review

When Dr. Richard Alpert met Neem Karoli Baba in India, he was on his way to becoming a Guru himself. This book was actually an assignment that NKB gave him, and it has had a vast reading over the years. This is my 3rd copy. Dr. Alpert went from using LSD to get his spiritual highs, to finding a permanent high through the science of Meditation. Well worth the read.

Unifies all religious traditions, brings together numerous useful spiritual practices, & is the most fun to read book ever written. It is Thee book about enlightenment, thee book about India, thee book about the 60's, & thee book about knowing how everything is in this world. Nobody in our time has written anything as complete & perfectly packaged as this. I sell hundreds of copies at my store every year. Just in case it helps you, I happen to recognize that this book not only gives you perfect knowledge about the spiritual path, it also has another fully optional dimension where you can take mushrooms or lsd and read the book while in this heightened state. I did this back in high school and realized 3 things. 1. You get a sneak preview (only through this book-it’s an unlocking key) of heaven & the other side, but it’s not the main attraction. 2. Enlightenment is something earned, attained, and won. 3. In regards to those who sell, play around, or use these things with arrogance, Christ was correct when he said, "Heaven suffereth much violence, and those who know it not steal in as thieves through the back door." This book should be given to everyone in the world, but would especially be helpful enlightening kids these days who are struggling with the choices around them like pot in high school & early life. Everyone should have access to the Truth.Read full review
This book remains a down to earth inspirational classic gently touching the curiosities of that which is the deepest and most beautiful of the human mind. In doing so, it moves with a simplicity and clarity of logic yoked to Ram Dass's verification through experiencing the choices of heart and quiet mind laid out by the greats who have gone before and sit yet in wait today.

As far as I am concerned, this is the ultimate "self help" book. One of the first pages the reader encounters is "Journey/the transformation Dr. Richard Alpert,Ph.D Into Baba Ram Dass. Alpert was Timothy Leary's partner in the 60's East Coast LSD movement. The transformation transpires when he goes to India in an attempt to find spirituality without the use of drugs. The book then becomes a primer for Ram Dass taking Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and a pinch of Taoism and giving the reader a foundation for existentialism, hence "Be here now." Agnostic myself, since I first read it in 1974, the book has given me a thirst to better understand other religions and philosophies. Working with Juveniles, I have found the "hippie" flavor to be something they will read and have given several copies away. I did have to learn that if parents are fundamental Christians there can be difficulties as Be Here now challenges the reader to question their beliefs as well as learn the beliefs of others. My only problem with the book is the binding. It will start falling apart after 300 to 500 readings (much like my beliefs and 54 year old body) I am currently on my forth copy. As mentioned in other reviews, I usually find something new that is pertinent to overcoming my personal perceptions and the unnecessary obstacles they create. I am also constantly amazed when a juvenile reads a copy and has a profound interpretation that I have never considered before. This book is a must for children of the 60's as it personifies the "peace and love concepts" in their purest form before they became diluted. While I consider this book a masterpiece and will always have a copy, Ram Dass is not my guru and with the exceptions of "Grist for the Mill" and "The only Dance there is" find his other books boring and surmise that his motive for writing them was personal gain.
