I bought this pedal to enable me to do strong lead breaks with good sustain and some fattening of the sound with a little dirt. I had bought another brand and a compressor but they were noisy and offered nothing more than bad monkey could give me. Having bypass is great and I love the output to the main sound system. I no longer need to mike up my amp. Where I play has lots of flat echo walls so don't need the spring reverb of my amp. I love the name and the way it sounds. For years I have played clean guitar. This has just the dirt I need to keep up to date playing today's church music. Turn it up and I get great sustain which I love. It's the only pedal I need in my situation.
I bought the Bad Monkey 'cause I'd heard such great things about them; how they're better than boutique pedals etc. So I can't say I agree with those that think this is the best OD pedal you can buy, but it is very good. Used as a boost to overdrive the front end of a tube amp it is really excellent, whether you just want "a bit more" or complete saturation. I usually set the Low & High to 12 O'clock, Gain to 10 o'clock and Level to 3 O'clock as a lead boost and for that it is superb. I am a purist tone freak; I have seen vids where the user demonstrates some tone suck but this is an impedance matching thing and on my rig this does not happen, and I find the Bad Monkey to be very transparent with all my guitars. I do prefer some of my other boutique pedals for tone for all out distortion, but on the other hand they cost more than four times as much. For the money it's real hard to beat. The Bad Monkey has a permanent slot on my pedal board, and that's more than my other OD pedals get.Read full review
I bought the Digitech bad monkey and i could not be happier, i use the pedal for solo boosting my plexi style amplifier, the bad monkey is a very transparent o/d pedal and because it has a bass and treble control, you can dial it up with a classic mid hump or dial that right out. These pedals are awesome quality for the money and well worth having on your pedal board.
Bad monkey is a great general purpose overdrive, with a warm tube screamer type sound but with the bonus of high and low eq. I like the large foot switch instead of the toggle ones so you can't miss it.
I've tried all the best pedals out there but this Bad Monkey takes the biscuit. Gives me the exact amount of tone and gain through my valve amp, whether it be a single coil or humbucker. Very Happy
