The life of the Director of "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein" James Whale, extraordinary personal life, one of the few openly Gay film makers, ahead of his time, worth seeing. Also some good extras. Recommended..

This was the best film I saw this year. An account of the last days of the gay director, James Whale, most famously recognized for Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein. A wonderful period piece (the 1950's), the film develops an emotional texture through momentary flashbacks that illustrate an evocative mood bourn from relationships that peopled his past. This film was carried by the luminary actor, Ian Mckellar. His (mostly) subtle recollections unfolded an interesting lifetime and contrasted the public antipathy of his own gayness with Frankenstein's existence. McKellar's performance was complemented with the best acting job of Brendon Fraser's career. Fraser's character evolved from a simple gardener with pedestrian opinions, to an emotionally intelligent student of social awareness. The icing on this cinematic cake was the unforgettable performance of Whale's housekeeper, the late Lynn Redgrave. A stern, judgemental but loving caretaker, she quietly seizes the viewer's respect. The movie travels slowly, but each scene is delectable and lends it's charm to the finale. This is a gem that is not to be overlooked.Read full review
