The band does a great job of laying down the Motown drums and analog sound behind Leon. At times there are hints of more bluesy roots - a slide solo or an acoustic backing guitar - that reveal Leon’s previous musical motif. Tunes that really hit the Sam Cooke roots are “Smooth Sailin’” and “Twistin’ & Groovin’.” “Lisa Sawyer” and “River” point us toward the religious/gospel area of Leon’s musical sensibility. His voice is outstanding and his interpretations are smooth and supple. I like the record and it’s in high rotation for me right now. The downsides: only 37 minutes?? And I feel that I hear some overdrive processing on the vocals on some tracks that fuzzes that clean smooth tone he’s got. Is the CD bad, or was this a cute producing trick? slightly annoying to me. This record shows promise and I’m looking forward to Leon’s next.Read full review
