Monte Walsh
Monte Walsh is one of the Greatest American Cowboy Stories ever written, and the original movie with Lee Marvin and Jack Palance is Superb. I have waited for years for this movie to be available on DVD, and finally it is available. There was a remake of Monte Walsh, but it was Hollywooded Up so bad that it was a sad dissapointement, and that, in part was due to the fact, that like Gone With The Wind, There will only ever be 1 Rett Butler or Scarlett Ohara, and There will only ever be 1 Monte Walsh, I Chet Rollins, 1 Shorty, and 1 Martine. The Original acting Cannot be Outdone and The Bronc Riding scene is one of the best ever captured on film. This movie Depicts Real Cowboys at the turn of the century, dealing with the fact that their only way of life was quickly coming to an end. The actors are so believable, that you cannot imagine anyone else playing these parts. A few movies are able to tell the story like no others ever have, and Monte Walsh, like Lonesome Dove and Tom Horn, Leave you feeling like you were there. Just like with The Wizard of Oz, there was Magic on the original set.The Cast and Crew Achieved something special, that will go down in the anals of movie making as one of the Finest Cowboy Movies Ever Made.
It is a superb vision of being a Cowboy at the end of that era.
Monte Walsh is a movie made from the book of the same name. It is about the days when the independent ranches of the Old West were being bought up by conglomerates. The Cowboy was living a lifestyle that disappears as we watch the movie. As jobs vanish some good men throw in with men who are already desperate and survival is the only law they obey. Living as a Cowboy was never a path to a ranch of your own. The pay never would have let a man get property of his own beyond has saddle and gear and Maybe a horse. Monte loses his best friend to another old friend gone bad. He sets out to catch the man who killed his friend and kills him in a running fight. He spent his days after yearly roundups with a girl who made a living entertaining men. He loved her but knew he couldn't provide a home for them, so he never proposed to her. He considered quitting Cowboying and working in a Wild West Show, but found it demeaning to him as a working Cowboy. His girl aged and finally worked as a waitress in very poor conditions. She finally became ill, and She sent for him but died before he came to her. Monte never accommodated to any other life, so he finishes riding fence alone with his horse as his companion.
A good, gritty western
The era of the open range western cowboy was barely a generation long and this tale is about the end of that era. Both this rendition and the Selleck remake are excellent but I like the Marvin original slightly better. Get both! The book is also a good read!

My favorite movie of all times. Lee Marvins best perfomance.
End of an era, cowboys are becoming extinct and most have nothing left to do . Hard times and how they dealt with it. The music throughout the movie is the best ever. Add in a love story and you have one of the best movies ever.
