I purchased this as my first high-definition camcorder. I own and I'm familiar with Panasonic's standard-definition camcorder, the AG-DVX100b. This made learning the HPX170 much easier. However, there's still a good learning curve to meet (at least for me). The picture and audio quality is excellent. It uses the P2 cards. The P2 format is stable and is recognizable with my video-editing programs. The downside is that the P2 cards are very expensive.
This camera is amazing, every time I use it I learn new functions. Much lighter that the hx200 with no loss of function and potentially even a better picture. Love this camera.

It's thinner and lighter compared to its predecessor. Better image quality overall because of the ASA rating of 500 compared to the HVX at 320. (for those who don't understand that means the camera is far superior in lowlight conditions). The colors blow me away too, you can achieve some sick images straight out of the box. here is an example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq0rLAOC3Eo
I use 2 of these at work every day. Now I have one at home. The P2 format is useful if you are going to do serious video editing. I wouldn't put one of these cameras on a consumer user's hands. But I sure do recommend them for people who shoot video for money.
