Before purchasing the Tamron 150-600 mm lens. I watched many you tube editorials on the product. And have been very pleased with the results. In fact so pleased. I have also purchased a Tamron 10-24mm wide angle. I would recommend Tamron as a quality manufacturer of lenses, Producing quality lenses at an affordable price. Thank you Tamron. Steve A.

I bought this lens because it offered 600mm over the 400mm of my canon lens that had gone in for repairs. I read numerous reviews which praised the lens for its value for money. I took the lens to Lake Mungo National Park where I had 2 days bright sunshine and a day of overcast skies and rain. I was amazed at the quality of the images produced. The lens is lightweight and very much of plastic construction, no solid metal visible. The zoom works effortlessly with no noticeable sticking or grabbing. I photographed a range of birds in flight against open skies and little brown jobs hiding in foliage. The lens was mounted on a canon 5D mkII which is notorious for slow focus even with canon lenses. Focus of the Tamron was rapid when there was no bright sky in the frame, focus was haphazard or impossible without manual help against small objects over water or against bright sky. Comparison shots with a canon 100-400 showed that up to 400mm in good light the Tamron performed as well as the Canon even up to 100% crops. The keeper rate overall was less than with the canon lens, however, one must realise that the depth of field at 600mm is much narrower than than 400m and many rejects were because of lack of focus of parts of subjects caused by narrow DOF. For water rats and larger land animals I tried to keep the aperture at f8 of f9 to prevent loss of focus. Generally the camera was shot in manual taking RAW images at ISO 1600, 1/1600th shutter speed and f6.3. Shooting apostle birds in shadowy undergrowth I dropped the shutter speed to 1/320 giving me an extra 2 1/2 stops and produced startling good images. Bottom line, the lens is of lightweight construction but survived the treatment meted out. I kept it in a Think Tank holster attached to the camera where it was well protected. At 100% crops the images are noticeably softer than a canon lens when viewed with Adobe Lightroom but 8 x 12 prints look very good. Focusing against bright sky is an issue, I found a helping finger on the manual focus ring helped the AF find focus. The AI servo worked well with both cross ways flying birds and those coming straight at me. The lens offers terrific value for money if you want to be able to get a keeper of a small wren or honeyeater and need the 600mm reach. It is not as good overall as a canon L lens but unless you have an extra few thousand to spend it is worth having. I would like to try it on a 1Dx.Read full review
