Vera is as captivating as she is unlikely as a super sleuth. She certainly does not look the part, but is wonderfully surprising. Her sergeant's children call her "Mussolini" for her incongruous dictatorial style. The plots generally revolve around witnesses who lie, usually to protect others or deep secrets frequently unrelated to the present murder, except as a cause of mental instability of the perpetrators. Also, frequently there is a murder or grievous crime in the past that relates directly to the current one, which Vera ultimately solves as well. All of the malefactors past and present are ultimately brought to justice, or at least exposed. That always feels good. I am fully addicted to Vera and I hope the British fascination with "Who dun its" persists so this wonderful series will continue.Read full review
