This book provides a lighthearted countdown of a child's bedtime routine. Numerous small hamsters come to visit a child and his pet hamster right before bedtime. Peggy Rathmann's amusing illustrations show the proliferation of hamsters engaged in a variety of activities - playing soccer, kayaking, taking pictures, brushing teeth, playing guitar, or flying through the air on a parachute improvised from a pair of underwear, etc. The pictures provide opportunities to compare the hamsters to their human counterparts - musicians, tourists, sports players, campers, families, etc. There are also plenty of opportunities for counting, discussing bedtime routines, and reflecting on the hamsters' contraptions. In the story, the child's father remains oblivious to the presence of the hamsters even though the travel section of the newspaper he is reading announces mid-page "Hamsters - Take the 10 Minute Bedtime Tour." I notice new things in the illustrations each time I pick up this book. I think most children and adults would be amused by this mostly wordless book. The story is probably most appropriate for children seven and younger.Read full review
