The one outstanding benefit of this Nikon is the ruggedness of the internal frame. Unlike so many of the point-and-shoot cameras on the market, this one can take a bit more of a beating without needing to be replaced. Since the P7000 did not have a positionable view screen, you can find them online at really great prices (I paid less than $100). If you want to pay $100 more, you can opt for the Nikon P7100 which primarily upgrades to a positionable view screen. Both the P7000 & P7100 give you nearly all the same image control as a D-SLR, or you can choose full auto and let the camera do everything itself. Sure, the lens could be a little faster, but the built-in flash does a pretty good job for most scenarios. Unless you're wanting to blow up your images to some outrageous size for printing, the 10 megapixel sensor is fine. Final thought... Great images, great control, great price.Read full review

I am very impressed with this camera. It has a lot of the features that you only find on a full size DSLR but it can fit in your pocket. I've already taken a few pictures and I'm impressed with the image quality. I can't wait to get it out to do some serious shooting. The P7100 and above have the articulated screen, but you pay significantly more for that. I don't think I will miss it. For a point and shoot the speed is good and I still haven't installed firmware version 1.2 which I've read actually speeds the camera up. A very satisfied buyer.

Let me start off by saying I am photographer with 7+ years experience, I have used several camera brands but for my digitals I have used Nikon. I use a Nikon D300 for my main camera and wanted a nice point and shoot to take everywhere I didnt want to carry the 30 pound bag my SLR and lens are in. My first shots on this camera where a disappointment, I didnt like the focus speed or the write time to memory. I researched the problem and a free download of the latest firmware fixed the issues. Its large enough for my hands and the setup options rival my older Nikon D70. Its a easy camera to use if you have had some time on a DSLR, you will need the book if your new to serious photography. My wife and I went on a weekend trip and I took it to shows that your not supposed to bring a big SLR to, and it did great in low light, the image stabilization works well. Street shots at night where also very sharp. Daytime shooting the colors are very accurate and not grainy until you are past ISO 800 and zoomed in about 50%. You can go full manual and have complete control over every adjustment, or you can go full auto. It has at least a dozen pre-set scene settings, most of them very nice. Dont fall for the high pixel count of some point and shoots, most of the time the sensor is so small, the camera has to take several images with it and layer them up to get you your shot, and that always make the image fuzzy. This camera has a large sensor, and a good lens, the images are very sharp, and if you use a small tripod, close to the image quality of say my D70 or D50. I didnt buy it for the video capability, but when I tried it, it worked OK, a purpose built camcorder is what you should use if you need video. I would recommend this to anyone who needs the perfect mid camera, not a cheap point and shoot, and not a pro-SLR.Read full review
I chose this camera after looking at many other makes and models mainly because it has excellent battery life, colors, quality, low light performance and zoom compared to aperture. It has 7.1X at F5.6 which is great for long distance shooting. It also has a hot shoe to blast away light! The camera is very solid and its really compact! Plus the most important part is the EV dial and virtual horizon which helps me stay in control. Also the shutter speed goes upto 1/4000 which is amazing to a camera this small and affordable. The Camera's auto focus system was a mess at first, it worked great in auto mode but not in others. Then it seems Center Wide setting solved it.The camera is a bit slow in low light focusing. But everything is perfect. I didn't even need to update the firmware! I'm so happy with it that I bought TWO!Read full review
It was a toss up between the Canon G10 and the Nikon P7000. The Nikon has a learning curve that can be a little trying but with time you will become comfortable with it and then the photographer in you will come out. All the reviews I read on both cameras were 50/50 each way and I choose the Nikon for it's looks, durability and of course it's good reviews. I was so impressed with the P7000 that after a couple weeks I purchased a second for my wife. This one was still in the box and appears to be unused. I have background in photography as a newspaper photographer and Lab Tech and wedding photographer. I wish I would have had this equipment back in the day. LC

My first experience with this camera was through my cousin who's a professional photographer. He uses this camera exclusively when he's out traipsing around for those "Point and Shoot" moments. I was so impressed with this camera, I've bought 1 for my wife and 1 for me. This camera is insanely easy to use, takes perhaps arguably the best quality JPEG photos for it's intended use, and has MANY and I do mean MANY little extras guaranteed to delight once you dig into the manual or discover them by accident. If you are looking to use Photoshop, then set the settings to RAW and manipulate to your heart's content. There's even a little function to enhance the photo while it's in the camera that is amazing! I intend to use these cameras also to set up and record 720p video, allowing closeups during live music performances (I'm a musician and soundman at heart). This camera has inspired me to dig deeper into photography and so far, my wife and I have taken several hundred photos with hers (I just got mine!)Because this camera has 2 manufacturer model upgrades, the P7100 and now the P7700. Some people are upgrading and letting the P7000 go at a fraction of the original cost on ebay. The only close competition would be the Canon equivalent, but I can't speak on it. Yes, the P7100 has the adjustable view screen, but that wasn't for the money something I needed, and the P7700 has a fully articulating view screen....but no viewfinder, so I've purchased 2 of the P7000 for less that a new P7100. These cameras seem slightly heavy, but not disturbingly so if you are looking for a quality Point and Shoot, don't discount the Nikon. I've found nothing to dislike about this camera. It does exactly what I want it to do....take quality pictures without fiddling around with a bunch of settings I know nothing about. Heck, I can't get the sound I want out of my guitar amp and I've been playing for over 30 years, so I don't need a complicated camera frustrating me. Point and Shoot....got it. If it were possible, I'd post some of the scenic photos I've taken to show what it's capable of, but I don't know how. If you take a chance on this camera, you will NOT be disappointed!Read full review
New one is P7100. I just got this one on ebay for under 280 It's "nice P&S camera " in one word. I have used several P&S cameras Sigma DP1, Sigma DP2, Fuji X100 and Sony Nex 5. Picture quality is not excellent like other APS-C sensor size camera but it's still good image quality with it sensor size. There are many buttons to control the camera and you can control the camera easily like DSLR (I'm a Canon 1D mk2N and 5D Mk2 user)cameras. However, because of these buttons, it's bigger than any other PS cameras. so Pro Control ability ( exposure dial is awesome) Build quiality Cheap Now ----------------- if you are nikon user, you like this one absolutely zoom and picture quality - good points ----------------- Con to many buttons for beginner (or Mom) heavy and big -----------------------------------Read full review
Soon after I received my camera I left on a month long trip to Chile. I had little time to get used to the camera, but I came back with some superb pictures. In fact, I still have to learn more about some of its functionalities. But it speaks for the little box that you don't have to know everything from the start. One item I find disappointing was the manual focus. Hard to see on the display if your item is really 'focused' and the zoom is too fast to zero in. Nothing works better than old fashioned turning on the lens. And it is great to have a viewfinder. But, what happened to digital rather than optical ones ? No parallax, and an exact rendition of your pix, basically a duplicate of your LCD, but visible in back-lit situations ?
I saw someone using this camera and I said to myself "I've got to get one of these!". The camera is compact and light and comes with a battery that gives it a lot of shooting time. The images on the 3" screen are sharp with excellent color. Low light shots have very little noise an important factor to me since I shoot a lot under poor lighting situations. Video clips have very high resolution. There are lots of controls for an advanced photographer with a setting to control flash output to be particularly valuable. Please be aware that the screen displays a cool image which is not present when the images are downloaded so do not delete an image for this until the image is uploaded. Bye, bye Olympus. Nikon where have you been all my life?
It's my 85% camera. It does the usual stuff for family and friends. I have not had focus issues as I know that in some circumstances ANY camera will have issues focusing and I resort to manual focus. PSAM are all button or dial changed quickly as is the ISO-for when I need to override the auto point and shoot modes. Scene modes really work. I have an image from this camera in a gallery on canvas 30 x 40-quality rivals my D300 and D2X. I only shoot this guy JPEG. I find that I can't turn a RAW file into anything better than this point and shoot does with it's own JPEGS. The other 15% is flying birds and very fast moving macros subjects or else the really wide angle shots that my 10-24mm does as this goes low to 28mm. The camera is not so hot at 200mm as it's now a 5.6 and it needs good lighting. Don't take my word-test it against the G12 and S95 Canons-make up your own mind.Read full review
