One reviewer incorrectly stated that this calculator was useless without a replacement battery pack. This is untrue. They work fine with a 9 volt. In fact the original old battery pack supplied 9 volts. Just like the TI-30's. I have no clue as to why they went to the trouble of sticking a battery pack in it , and and needing an adapter. Maybe a collector can fill us in on that. You can make it work by splicing a 9 volt battery type connector it, and it's very simple. You can find one online, at a radio shack, Frys, or just cut one off something you don't use anymore. NOTE: When you hook a 9 volt connector up to it, the Black wire in the calculator is positive and the red wire is negative. Crazy huh ? Have fun !

When I was a sudent at the Faculty of Engineering, UNAM (México City), I received a TI-55 as a birthday gift. I used it and enjoyed all the qualities it had and the valuable help it gave in my studies. Sadly, the calculator was lost due to an experiment and I purchased a far more powerful TI-59, which I still have. I now am a collector and decided to have that calculator again. It brings good memories from my student time. Perhaps the only two drawbacks I found are the little time the batteries last and the fact that there are no parts available, I would like to purchase a power supply to recharge the batteries as the original design was intended. The collector who would like to have one of these, should be aware that the polarity of the battery terminals is reversed, red is negative, black is positive, this is not an error form the TI engineers, it is due to a design characteristic: the integrated circuit runs on a negative voltage supply, the other problem is that the majority of owners left the calculator in a dark drawer for eons and forgot to remove the batteries, then the batteries leaked and corroded the inside of the power supply battery pack, it is difficult to make it work again, if it is posible to recover the damaged circuit (a task that an electronics engineer can do). The calcualtor, on the other hand, has a great deal of features to solve everyday engineering and statistical problems, apart from its nice vintage look and the appealing, hipnotizing LED display, the fashion rage of the '70s. Fortunately, the device has a power saving feature, that makes the use of the original rechargeable battery pack a delight. The possibility of writing a short program to calculate many repetitive operations is like a cherry on top of the cake, not bad for a relatively low budget calculator from that time. The main advantage is that the only integrated circuit it has is sturdy, if nobody tampered with it, it is bound that the calculator will work with the correct 9V supply. The calculator is a prize for a collector who likes the powerful features of an advanced scientific calculator and the nice vintage look of the '70s.Read full review
Arrived as pictured. Both calculators work and were sent to Germany for new solid-state battery pack upgrades. I sent them to Steffen Schmid for installation of new rechargeable battery and new battery-circuit-board (not main calculator motherboard). Steffan Schmid (in Germany) did an upgrade for me years ago with my personal TI-55 and brought it back to life. I expect to have two "new" and functioning rechargeable calculators in a few days when the package arrives back from Mr. Schmid. Good transaction by ALL involved. Quite concise and very well written. A valuable asset to understanding the capabilities of the device, keyboard layout, etc. I's worth every bit of the purchase price.
