I love historical films and this one was very enticing to watch as it covered times in early England in King Alfred's time before all the 'lordly kingdoms' were united to form England as we know it today. It covers the struggles of the Saxon population against the Danes or Vikings as they were known, who invaded 'England' to plunder and steal whatever they could take back to their country. They did not stop at stealing children and taking them back as slaves as well as men and women, and gold and money was particularly important to them. If the 'English' resisted they were very harshly dealt with, loss of life usually the result and you needed to live in a very strongly fortified town or castle to be hopefully safe. The film follows such a child who was taken and adopted by a good family and the story of his return to 'England, to help King Alfred fight against these invaders. He often finds himself torn between his Saxon Birth and Danish upbringing, and those who he made fast friends with in his new adopted country. I loved this film. It was very well made and true to the times as one would expect, and spared no effort in reproducing the battles and hate between these two 'nations' and the resulting havoc caused by invader and Saxons, each trying to either to hold on to what they held most dear or the Danes to take what they thought they were entitled to, as a very strong, warlike nation. I await with baited breath the release of Season four of 'The Last Kingdom.'Read full review
