Great lens and compact size
I bought this product because I really wanted a good quality zoom lens that is not too big. I like to take pictures while hiking or bike riding. I am not willing to take the lens off to place the camera in a bag. This lens is small enough to fit into my (smallish) camera bag. It was my first zoom lens and I am very happy with it. Since it is my first zoom lens I cannot compare it to others but I am amazed by the sharpness of the shots and so were others.

Lighter than 70-200 or 100-400 L
Although I have the 70-200 f/2.8 and the 100-400, I have found this Canon L lens the 'happy medium', great zoom, focuses close up, light, and fast to focus. It has become my workhorse.

Top lens... fast smooth, sharp focus, should be one in every camera bag!
This is a great lens.. focus is fast and accurate, image stablisation means you can leave the tripod at home and still get great hand held shots. There is no falloff (darkened corners) at all on a 1.6 camera and only moderate falloff on a full frame. No flares and ghosts makes for great sunsets and the bokeh if very nice on all ranges Its light but not flimsy and has a great zoom range
