The story itself has a somewhat controversial cloud hanging over it (is it really a true story?) but once you get past that and let the story tell itself, it really is a chilling account of how quickly the lives of four Hells Kitchen boys were turned around, inside out and torn apart at a juvenile detention home, after committing one stupid crime. The movie adaptation was spot on (though of course the book is always better, and in this case the book does have more that the movie missed) and in reading this all I could hear was the narration by Jason Patric, who plays the adult Lorenzo "Shakes" Carcaterra. Some scenes in this are not for the squeamish, otherwise is a very good read.
