This book has the aims of introducing readers to the basic elements of instrumentation systems, enabling readers to develop a basic understanding of the techniques used for the measurement of the process variables of pressure, level, density, flow and temperature, and enabling readers to appreciate the need for maintenance of measurement systems. The chapters in the book are arranged as follows: overview of instrument systems - chapter 1, the constituent elements of such systems - chapters 2, 3, 4, measurement techniques for process variables - chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, maintenance of instrument systems - chapter 9. Each chapter includes worked examples and problems, answers appearing at the end of the book. The book covers the BTEC First Certificate/Diploma in Engineering unit Instrumentation and Process Measurements (F28718). It is also seen as being of value to students on other BTEC courses and CGLI students, indeed any course where a basic introduction to instrumentation systems and process measurements is required. A basic knowledge of science and mathematics has been assumed. The science required is basic physical science. Key elements of science are, however, developed in the appropriate chapters. The mathematics required is just the ability to handle numbers, interpret graphs and in a few instances handle simple algebraic equations.
