Educated in Texas and Canada, he did undergraduate work in energy and public policy issues at Simon Fraser University and obtained a law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1983. He retired from his litigation law practice in downtown Vancouver in 2009, after conducting over 120 trials and appeals. During this time he learned how to present a winning argument with the best evidence available. After retiring he bought a small farm in the Gulf Islands of B.C., intending to grow grapes, but the weather grew steadily colder, and his research into the cause of those changes led to this book. He lives on Hornby Island, with his partner Margit Lieder and two dogs, Millie and Hanna. In 2011 he published a do-it-yourself book on Amazon.com.
