The girl Clare d...efies her guardians and sneaks off to the home of a lonely elderly man who is frowned upon by the local community for unspecified reasons. He permits her to walk his elderly horse Captain along the nearby lanes on her own. One day a strange car stops and a man gets out and chats to Clare. She talks with him and gives him all her personal details then poses for a photograph with the horse. He tells her it will be in the local paper. The adventure goes on from there. It is a good old fashioned story, with a sweet ending BUT it is all wrong in this modern era. The dangers this girl courted just take your breath away. The fact that nothing bad resulted perhaps undermines modern parental warnings and may encourage children to take avoidable chances. Michael Morpurgo is a brilliant children's writer but ageing and his latest works are perhaps not cognisant of modern restrictions on youngsters. Keep the kids to his older works, there are heaps of them.
