"Close To The Edge" is one of Yes' Masterpieces. Originally released in 1972, this album has firmly stood the test of time, constantly appearing in various "greatest albums" lists. The album opens with the massive title piece "Close To The Edge". The piece starts with this energetic, fast paced opener which immediately grabs your attention, setting you up for the main theme of the piece. As you continue listening, the main theme is taking you through different emotions, light and dark, bright and shade as it leaves you wondering where you are heading but before you know it, the piece suddenly changes into a different section. Church organ, lead and vocal harmonies are the only parts to this middle section, giving the listener another pallete of emotion and dynamics. The main theme returns in a new light preparing you for the climax. The climax reveals that the rest of the piece has also served as a build up as well. A huge, majestic ending leaves the listener in astonishment, completely breathless. And that's just side one!!! The listener is once again sent through this journey full of dynamic and emotion for another nine minutes with "And You And I". The end of "And You And I" allows the listener to reflect on the ethereal, majestic amazement of the piece. The album closes with "Siberian Khatru". While still engaging and powerful, "Siberian Khatru" allows the listener to relax a little before the album is finished. The musicianship on this album is incredible, the playing is amazing, the composing is at its finest. "close To a The Edge" is an extremely emotional, engaging album. It can be viewed in some way shape or form as a brilliant collection of pieces of contempery classical music.Read full review
