In May 2001, a conference funded by the UGC was held on 'the scholarship of teaching and learning'. This book contains a selection of the large number of papers given there. The papers were selected for quality and coherence and have been quite heavily revised for the book. The book is divided into three sections: on critical and creative thinking; on motivation and on collaboration. The papers mix strong discussions of particular theoretical issues with reports of experiments and research that shed light on a wide variety of issues that arise in teaching at university level.
