A great story for those old & crusty Footrot Flats fans who miss it so much. Anyone with a hint of a connection with rural life will find this very entertaining. I doubt that it would be acceptable in urban society these days, but it is just so down to earth, reflecting rural values in a warm & engaging way.

This story is actually a series of random vignettes culled from the Footrot Flats series of comic books, slapped together in a slap-happy and slapstick fashion. It is not a linear story with any discernible plot, the characters are not developed and the overall impression it conveys is a regret for what it could have been - something much better; a feeling I had when I saw the movie in a cinema years ago.. The biggest disappointment is Wal's Gene Kelly routine in the main drag of Raupo on a Saturday night. It was not only silly and over-long, but the lyrics and Wal's song-delivery in a totally out-of-character Dave Dobbyn vocal, is almost cringe-worthy. As we know, John Clarke voiced Wal and was himself a decent singer, but nothing could have redeemed this dire song. However, while I expected more from anything Murray Ball might have endorsed, such as more of the social satire of the comics, the "Slice of Heaven" song did redeem it somewhat, but not enough for me to recommend the DVD. I'd rate it 2 out of 5. It gets 3 stars because there are no half-stars in the rating scale. I only bought this DVD in the wake of John Clarke's death. It might not stay with me very long.Read full review
