Garden Gates

Garden Gates

Garden gates have a both decorative and security role. They are designed to be the crown piece of your fence and keep undesirables away from your estate. You can even build your own gate using a number of garden fencing supplies, but a proper gate model is more than a couple of fence panels stuck together and mounted on hinges. Choosing the right gate will require careful consideration of its materials, purpose and features.

Purpose and Size

When choosing a gate, always start with the hole in the fence you need to cover. Gates from very different sizes cover your pathway or driveway access. Measure the size of the gate you need and start from there. You'll find gates in many combinations of width and height, but keep in mind that you might need some garden fencing supplies to close the gap if the gate is not an exact match. Note that the bigger a gate is, the heavier it becomes, so expect different movement mechanisms. Larger gates usually slide on rails as opposed to opening on hinges. There are also large gates that are supported by wheels, but pick those only if the wheels have a nice flat surface to roll over.

Material

Considering the material is also extremely important as it greatly affects both looks and performance of the gate. A wooden garden gate is a natural choice if you have a wooden picket fence. Wooden models work well if you just need a light door that moves on hinges. If your garden has a wall or an iron fence, the wrought iron garden gate will suit it best.

Automation

Automation in gates has also been introduced to improve the user experience. Modern gates both move and lock using a remote control. Automated movement is an excellent feature if you wish to facilitate the way you get in and out of your driveway. It's also very helpful for letting in guests if your garden gate is further away from your house. Combined with a home security system and an automatic locking mechanism, the gate will also greatly improve your home safety.
