In der vorliegenden Schrift wird die Indikation zu den dia gstischen und therapeutischen Massnahmen als eine per sonliche Entscheidung des behandelnden Arztes dargestellt: auf grund seiner Erfahrung und auf grund des Eindrucks, den er von der Personlichkeit des vor ihm liegenden Patien ten gewinnt, entscheidet er nach bestem Wissen und Gewis sen uber sein Handeln. Das Dargelegte gibt die personliche Meinung des Autors wieder, die dieser in jahrelanger Erfah rung am Krankenbett gewonnen hat. Gesprache mit Ethikern haben gezeigt, dass diese keine klaren Anweisungen fur das Handeln des Arztes am Kran kenbett geben konnen, sondern erst, nachdem sie eine Mei nung gehort haben, eine Beurteilung der Handlung und eine Einschatzung des Vorgehens zu geben vermogen. Juristen beziehen einerseits im Einzelfall eine eindeutige, wenn auch oft nicht einheitliche Stellung, vertreten aber andererseits nur die moralische Mindestanforderung. Als uberzeugter Kliniker halt sich der Autor fur berechtigt, seine personliche Stellungnahme zu veroffentlichen und zur Diskussion zu stellen. Die Abhandlung ist fur praktisch tatige Arzte in Klinik und Praxis bestimmt. Sie soll eine Lucke ausfullen, welche zwischen der schulmassig gelehrten, scheinbar so klaren arztlichen Handlungsanweisung einerseits und zwischen den tatsachlich angewandten Praktiken arztlicher Kunst am Kranken andererseits vermittelt, indem sie zu einer vernunf tigen Vorgehensweise anregt, in der sich sowohl verstandes massiges als auch ethisches Denken realisieren.
